We have purchased another tern raft to add to the one we brought last year.
This has now been delivered to Lea Farm Lake and has spent the last week or two in the NE corner but has now been moved to the SE corner ready to be put out soon. One raft we hope will be used by the Black-headed Gulls and hopefully when we put the other one out then the Common Terns will use that one. To try to make sure this happens we have to put out the rafts at the right time, especially for the second one, too early and the gulls will use it before the terns arrive, too late and the terns will try to nest on the island where they are likely to get flooded off. Some years they are lucky and manage to nest sucessfully on the island but most years they are flooded out.
We are very grateful to Berkshire Ornithological Club (BOC) who gave us a very generous grant for the new raft.
